The 2010 Arsies: January 5, 2010

January 5, 2010

Today was a decidedly one-sided matchup, between venerable stalwarts Sepultura and the barely-metal Porcupine Tree, who I'll admit are largely seen as metal only because of Steven Wilson's involvement with Opeth. But hey, if the Arsies can kick off successfully with Alice In Chains, why not?
And in fact, while this was in fact no contest, the winner wound up being Porcupine Tree's "The Incident." Oddly catchy, typically broody, and at a few points legitimately heavy, this album has impressively hooky staying power. Meanwhile, Sepultura's "A-Lex" amazed the judges with songs that were not only forgettable, but were in fact somehow forgotten while still being heard.
And so, the unlikely Porcupine Tree proceeds to the next round. Tomorrow's contest: Job For A Cowboy vs Heaven & Hell.
